Save Money Heating and Cooling Your Home
Summer heating and cooling bills can be astronomically high. There are several ways that you can keep your AC costs manageable while staying cool all summer long.
Setting your thermostat to a temperature as close as you can to the outside temperature will require less energy from your heating and cooling system. Likewise, keeping the house a bit warmer when you are gone during the day will save you a lot of money in the long run. For maximum cost efficiency, it is recommended that you keep your thermostat around 78°F (26°C) when you are away in the summer. Trying a programmable thermostat will allow you greater control over your home’s climate, as well as control over your heating and cooling bill.
A common misconception is that the lower the temperature you set on your thermostat, the quicker your home will cool down. Your heating and cooling system will progressively cool the house down at the same rate, and setting it to arctic temperatures will only drain your system of energy. Using ceiling fans and ventilation fans will help cool your home quicker without dramatically increasing your monthly energy bill.
There are other factors that can cause your home to be uncomfortably warm in the summer, as well. Cleaning and replacing your air filters regularly could be the quick fix your home needs to maintain a cool temperature at a low cost. Using appliances that generate heat, such as the stove, oven, or bright lamps, can actually cause the air in your home to increase temperature. Take advantage of daylight hours and save the lamps for night time in order to keep your heating and cooling costs down.
Following all the rules and your home is still warm or your bill is still high? Ensure that all cracks in doors and windows aren’t releasing any cool air. Investing in sealing and caulking where you need it could save you a significant portion of your monthly heating and cooling bill. If your home is sealed up and your HVAC unit still isn’t doing it’s job, it may be time to give us a call and have your heating and cooling system repaired.
